When you listen closely to the vibrant life of our diocese, you hear a rhythm of joy, resilience, and faith. In our communities, the communal beating of drums, the laughter of children, and the guidance of mentors come together in a beautiful symphony.

This drumming is not just a performance; it represents the shared heartbeat of the Mthatha community—a community that the Ursuline Sisters have had the profound privilege of walking alongside, serving, and empowering for generations.

The journey of the Ursuline Sisters (Company of St. Angela) in the Diocese of Mthatha is a story written in the key of love, education, and pastoral devotion. Guided by the visionary charism of our foundress, Venerable Anne de Xainctonge (inspired by the spiritual framework of St. Angela Merici), our mission has always been to read the "signs of the times" and respond to the deepest needs of the people.

Seeds of Faith: Our History in the Region

The story of the Ursuline presence in South Africa is rooted in a bold response to the missionary call. Arriving in 1934 with little more than their faith, a deep love for the Gospel, and a commitment to radical service, our early sisters set out to learn the local language, immerse themselves deeply in the rich Xhosa culture, and build sustainable local relationships from the ground up.

The Vision To reform society by supporting and empowering families, particularly focusing on local women and youth.
The Foundation The physical establishment of schools, clinics, catechism networks, and specialized domestic training centers.

Milestones of Grace: Key Pillars of Impact

01
Educational Empowerment

Our signature contribution. The schools we have established and managed have become local beacons of academic excellence and moral formation, raising generations of value-driven leaders, thinkers, and professionals.

02
Healthcare & Compassion

Stepping directly into the gap during critical public health crises—including the height of the HIV/AIDS epidemic—through the establishment of clinics, home-based care initiatives, and support networks for the vulnerable.

03
Uplifting Youth & Culture

Integrating faith with the beauty of traditional Xhosa music, drumming, and arts. Our ministries provide safe, creative spaces for the youth to steer away from despair and confidently step into their God-given dignity.

04
Spiritual Companionship

Working hand-in-hand with our diocesan priests across parish councils, sodalities, Liturgy animation, and sacramental prep—standing with families through moments of profound joy and deep grief alike.

Looking to the Future: Nurturing the Next Generation

As we look back at our historical milestones, we recognize that our mission continues to expand. The contemporary challenges facing our youth today—unemployment, substance abuse, and fracturing social structures—demand the same creative, adaptive spirit that our foundress urged us to cultivate. Our commitment to the Diocese of Mthatha remains unwavering: to stay present, listen closely to the rhythm of our people, and keep the fire of faith burning brightly for generations to come.

Walk Alongside Our Mission

We express our deepest gratitude to the bishops, priests, lay leaders, and families of Mthatha who have embraced us as mothers, sisters, and partners in building up the Kingdom of God. Want to support our local schools, youth programs, and clinics?
