Finding God in All Things: Our Ignatian Roots
To understand the interior drive of an Ursuline Sister of the Blessed Virgin Mary, one must look directly to our spiritual core. Grounded firmly in the Spirituality of St. Ignatius of Loyola, our life is a continuous balancing act of profound contemplative interior prayer and active, radical ministry out in the world. We do not run from society to find holiness; instead, we recognize that our very sanctuary is found directly in the streets, schools, and homes of the people we serve.
Following the historic defenses of Mother Anne de Xainctonge in 1604, we refuse the traditional structural limitations of a cloister. Our prayer fuels our action, and our action deeply enriches our prayer. We are called to be fully alive to the reality of the world around us.
The central source of our daily endurance is the Holy Eucharist. From our pioneer Swiss roots to our modern communities, regular Mass attendance, structured interior meditation, and deep Eucharistic adoration provide the spiritual fuel required for the harvesting field.
Formally codified into our official institute title by Pope Leo XIII in 1902, our surrender to the Blessed Virgin Mary shapes our maternal care for the community. We look to Mary as our ultimate exemplar of total, joyful compliance to the Holy Will of God.
Discerning the Signs of the Times
Ignatian discernment allows our South African Province to remain highly adaptive. As the societal struggles facing families in the Mthatha Diocese change—evolving from historic systemic transitions to modern layout challenges like youth unemployment and displacement—our spiritual tools give our sisters the insight to shift ministries dynamically, ensuring we remain "all things to all people."
