Parishes and Mission Centers
The apostolic work of the Ursuline Sisters in the Diocese of Mthatha has never been static. Following our foundational charism to expand active ministry where the needs are greatest, our historical footprint has left an indelible mark on multiple key parishes across the region.
📍 Ngcobo Parish
The Historical CradleAs the initial landing site for our 1934 Swiss pioneers, Ngcobo holds a sacred place in our history. Here, the first primary education infrastructures for local children were constructed. It was also the home of our groundbreaking domestic training centers, where local women acquired invaluable life skills and vocational security to support their families.
📍 Bedford Convent and Parish
Pastoral & Community HubBedford stands as an essential center of community formation. Over several generations, sisters stationed here focused intensely on pastoral visits, managing formal catechism programs, and establishing safe support networks aimed at uplifting young women experiencing social and economic hardship.
📍 Mthatha Cathedral Parish
The Heart of Diocesan CollaborationServing directly alongside the diocesan clergy, our presence at the Cathedral remains highly dynamic. The sisters here handle vast administrative duties, assist with parish councils and local sodalities, animate the sacred Liturgy, and guide couples and youth through formal sacramental preparation.
📍 Qumbu Parish & Rural Outposts
Healthcare & Rural Social WorkIn response to the deep material needs of more isolated populations, our presence in Qumbu expanded out into rural healthcare. The sisters established vital clinics and home-based care networks, providing life-saving comfort, medical assistance, and structural relief to the sick and abandoned.
